How was one division more or less legitimate than the others?

Here is where I agree, to a degree, with tf, CT and others - Zionism was a thing - nobody denies that - and Nazi Germany and the Holocaust (as well as Soviet Russia with it's hostility towards religion and relatively large Jewish population) - spurred a massive movement of Jews from European enclaves back to what is now called Israel.

What I can't worry about is what happened then - I can only deal with what's happening now - and the only solution from the Arabs is, "Kill all the Jews - problem solved." While the Jews have behaved deplorably at times, as well, they are at least justified as fighting for their very right to exist - something that is vehemently and publicly denounced by their enemies.

Makes for situations like the OP - Israel makes an agreement - then the terrorists say, "Not so fast. We didn't really mean it, because we didn't think you would agree. It doesn't matter, because our book says we can lie to you and kill you without consequence."

What was the population of Jerusalem in 1860? What percentage of the populations was Jewish? What demographic changes have occurred in Jerusalem since 1860? By 1880 most observers believed the Jews were a majority of residents, and the total population did not exceed 30,000 people. The current population of approximately 700,000 is largely immigrants, Jew and non-Jew.

It's my understanding that at the end of WWII, Gentiles made up 75% of the population between the River and the Sea, and they owned 93% of the land.

Hamas and its ilk will never accept that Jews fight back and won't roll over for them. They cannot accept a Jewish state. The Israelis need ot accept a Palestinian homeland. But... it must guarantee no terrorism and security that it wont attack Israel. So far neither side wants to give an inch. Let Hamas say we accept Israel as a country and let Bibi say we accept a Palestinian state but we both need to guarantee no rockets. 1dt rockets deal off.

Part of the problem is that there were not good census numbers at any time for the region. The connection of many Arabs to the land was not centuries old. There was much migration to the region as the introduction of capital, much of it Jewish, and then British when they undertook the Mandate, attracted Arabs from places with less economic development. How much migrations there was is a matter of debate, but the evidence of migration is pretty compelling. Here is one argument supporting Arab migration. LINK
