For the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo guys, owning a 'Vette was pretty much a requirement. Most of them were fighter jocks, had to keep up their proficiency.

Did you ask him if "the lights" were really ours or theirs?

Pretty much - but it was made easier because the Corvettes were donated by the dealerships.

I believe they put in special regulations to prevent that for the subsequent batches of astronauts.

But in the mid to late 60s You couldnt cross the street in Clear Lake City without seeing a 'vette bearing down on them =
