We have a mental illness epidemic in the US

maybe. We dont budget for it. Halfway houses used to keep people in some kind of feedback loop of sanity and decency.

Heres part of it:

You duplicate the company you keep.

You become like what you meditate on or even think about.

Games, video, programming all show killings by same or similar as recent events.

These guys are modeling what theyve learned.

The entertainment industry is a factor.

Marketing is a factor.

Dude did not just have a gun. He was dressed for the occaision.

Mayhem heroes are celebrated on media.

Sunday school is not going to cut into.it.

We may need to censor the portrayal of killings.

The best selling media is about mayhem and murder.

John wick says hi.

Dan, I have but one word to say about your post.

AMEN!

And our serial down-voter actually down-voted your post. We have to feel sorry for that poor soul.

i was referring to Mental illness not stress related. It's seems like every time we have a mass shooting at the end of the day the problem is the red flags that are missed that are related to mental illness.

It is interesting on the overall demographics of most of these shootings. Most are white suburban males, ostensibly middle class in background, aged 19-25...they also seem to be marginalized as individuals. Look at Columbine, Newtown, Parkland, and some of the others.

You also have outliers like Virginia Tech and Las Vegas and whereas we can cite all the "reasons" we can only do it post incident.

Ban "assault" weapons...great,do it, maybe the overall death toll per incident goes down, so I guess 10 body bags is better than 20? Still doesn't solve the problem of the overall why.Ban firearms? Yeah try that...but supposing you did, some of these people could create bombs or maybe use an automobile..You can get bomb designs online and use easy to obtain materials for a lot less than an AR 15...and easier to carry that can increase the body count.

People talk about mental health screenings and reporting "red flags"......so now I'm watching and ratting out my neighbor...I'm gonna be the neighbor lady on Bewitched?

None of the solutions being bandied by either side would stop this problem....unfortunately it is existential.

Reason why it's easier to catch serial killers is because we have been able to study their behaviors and childhood. Problem with mass shooters is that most of them end by suicide by cop or suicide. It's harder to get a sense of what went wrong in their lives which caused this behavior.

Its not a mental health issue. Its a lack of morals, etc., where society as a whole is less caring. Then there is the missing parent thing where kids these days aren't taught values. Don't forget to add all that in.

Edit: But its funny that shootings tend to happen when things go south for the dims. Just sayin.

What is the psychological diagnosis that predicts someone is going to become a mass shooter?

None. Psychiatrists can’t accurately predict suicide in patients they treated for long term —much less something as rare and complex as mass shooting. People seem to have psychiatrists and psychics (fortune tellers) confused.

I have studied this issue and worked with one of the first school shooters in our country.

We cannot predict when this will occur. If anyone has ever participated in "active shooter" training you know that the shooter can be anyone; that is, it is simply a matter of what sets them off.

Two specific patterns that have been noticed are depression and narcissism. I will try to find the link to the study.

I think it helps breed a disconnect from the human interaction experience that is exceedingly hard to quantify and yet, I know it almost the moment I see it in someone.

Spot on Rob, all of this technology is desensitizing us to the reactions and effects we have on others. People say mean things online and laugh it off these days when they could be affecting another person drastically. I don't know the solution, but you are 100% correct about the problem.
