Probably “rode the slide” forward, meaning he held it and eased it forward. Probably did it in the car before the attempted robbery to not attract attention. And it didn’t seat the round and have the gun ready to fire.

Probably had the bullet not in correctly due to clip not being inserted completely. Pulled slide back and thought round was chambered.
