He is correct. Germans shouldn't feel ashamed of their long proud history just because of a single regime that committed atrocities and misled the population through very effective propaganda.
Hell the Japanese still love Hirohito and they get way less shite for WW2 than the Germans do.

It's news because a country which is younger than 150 years old (Germany as a country wasn't born until 1871) to dismiss nearly 10% of its history is asinine.

They get almost no shite.
1) We dropped the bomb and they became the victims in 1 week after 5 years of horror and atrocities;
2) They became our partners and sort of subjects - we wrote their Constitution, dictated to them how they could act and put a permanent military presence there.
3) They became are huge trade partner.
So control, military subjagation and money absolved Japan in the American media's eyes.
You could find maybe 1 documentary on Japan on the History Channel.
But you had:

Hitler's Secret Tunnels
Hitler's Death Camps
The Secret Life of Adolph Hitler
Hitler's Panzers
Ad naseum...
Plus we let Hirohito live and blamed everything on Tojo...so history doesn't see Hirohito as a piece of shite.
