That's why I would bet he is running for President. Newsom is an offensive candidate who will go on the attack and does not shy away from the fight. This is the beginning. He has the money and the organization to be formidable. That being said he's the only Democrat with the balls to do this sort of thing. He does not run from his liberal/ progressive bona fides. That makes him a true threat.
The prospect of Newsom running is probably the only thing that keeps me up at night. He's Machiavellian. Dismiss him at your own peril.

Yep he has been building his bona fides for the last 15 or 16 years. He's smart he has the Getty money behind him and he he knows how to use power and make his opponents pay. Not only did he survive his recall, he came out of it more popular and powerful. You can trot out homeless in LA and SF, the over regulation, etc. He would say, bitch all you want , but I still get better than 60% of the vote. Plus I'm protecting the environment and I'm nice to the tranny's.
