Just saw Fox Biz do a spot on AI in farming and the panel just loves it - they can't wait for all this "cool" tech to do all of these jobs. A panel member owns stock in one of these companies, naturally, and he's super happy. Talked about automating Walmart warehouses.

I'm curious - what happens to our society and our economy when tens of millions are out of work? Where are they going to get money, and what are they going to do with their time?

How does cost cutting with AI benefit Walmart if there's no one left with any money to buy what they're selling?

There's a short YouTube video with Shapiro and Tucker and Shapiro asks Tucker if he would do something about AI and automation if he was president, using the example of autonomous vehicles. Tucker says (paraphrasing), 'hell yeah, I'd block it, you can't just displace all of these people'.

I don't see how we avoid serious problems with AI. Naturally the guy on the panel at Fox Biz just glossed over that and acted as if it wasn't a real issue to be concerned about - after all, his portfolio loves the surge from AI-related stocks that's taking place.

It's going to be a massive problem. Things are going to get worse.

I'm actually terrified of AI and it's impact.

I hate UBI and all it's implications.

But it's going to be the best solution we have.

The problem is we are going to have to tax away a lot of the productivity gains from corporations to pay for it.

Or just accelerate the bankrupting of the nation.

We're going to choose the latter.

One thing I dont yet understand about AI:

AI has to be segments independent of all other segments, right?

Being used by one area of operation - completely independent of all others?

It seems that each individual use of AI is completely an effort of an entity simply trying to gain efficiency or some nebulous goal - OF THEIR OWN?

The problem would arise out of their being a connected network of AI, coordinated by some little acne infested dipshcidt - or other villian, behind a curtain a la Wizard of Oz...

such as the weaponizer/weaponized evil from our occupying government?

Greed has driven this country downward. AI will be a kind of poetic justice to some, but a horror show for most.

So we are allowing million of low skilled labors in the country while at the same time eliminating jobs.
What can go wrong in the short and long term, tax payers get ready to pony up more for entitlements.

But we still have to import hordes of unskilled folks from the Third World to do the jobs that American AI won't, right?

We've already chosen the latter, just not in a conscious, informed fashion. We've done it in a lazy, "got manipulated by the man" fashion.

Recipe for massive amounts of crime, violence, and chaos. Almost like it's been planned that way.

As far as AI in agriculture, I'm working with robotics companies and drone companies. Drone can use sensors that can spot disease or signs of infestation, communicate with robotics, and then the robots go into a field and have the coordinates for issues from the drone's data. The robots can then use their own sensors to spot the issue, and either pluck out the diseased plant, or accurately treat the disease, either by use of a selective pesticide or plant killer accurately place to avoid contamination of other plants.

This doesn't mean manpower isn't needed, but it means healthier and larger crop yields.

They will all live in 15 minute cities on government supplied income and gruel.
Mmm, mmm...can't wait.

Yea, AI might be the single largest productivity booster human kind ever develops but let's table it because then what are people gonna do for work?

I totally agree.

While we are at it, let's ban lawn mowers because then we could employ many more people in landscaping when sickles are the most productive method of cutting grass again. Let's ban nail guns so that roofing crews can employ double the people. Hell imagine the good that would come from banning automated machinery, it's not like all that shite wasn't done by hand before, and think of all the jobs!

This is such a dumb backwards-arse line of thought. "AI will be so damn effective, let's squash it because then what will people do." Humans would still be working with sticks and rocks if we always thought this way.

It's going to end up like the Roman Empire. The Grain or Corn Dole, Circuses, and it will end the same way at a greatly accelerated pace. At least they got 500 years out of it. We will be lucky to get 320 years before the fall.

The problem is the pace it will develop and increase productivity is going to greatly outpace society's ability to adjust to the labor devaluation.

We can ignore that reality up until the point of the revolution or plan for it.

I have been involved in web and ai ( neural networks)… back when it was webcrawler.. mosaic.. and pretty much just linking universities and corporate research.. we were using neural net to mimick what geoscience interpreters were doing mentally and building artificial seismic and geologic interpretation models…this was back in the 90s.. never got it to work.. so when I heard people afraid of ai I thought ..goofballs….

Watched a breakdown of the father of AI explain his concerns..as humans we learn from questioning things and getting feedback from other humans.. we have to find them.. talk to them… and process the information..

With the web ALL computers are or can be linked and benefit from finding knowledge everywhere..from remote village in a jungle to major city.. so immediate knowledge available… you do not have to have a conversation and process the human language so immediate transfers of facts ( or data)… you have immediate processing if this into the model built for the AI to then cause some robotic thing to do something physical… and ability to rebuild the AI model from this to “learn”…

Better put do not kill humans in the models built…. but the North Korea will build one with out it..

We are on the verge of a new world imo.. like the Bronze Age etc.. this is a next step for humanity …..

I am 65 and have seen a lot technology and very pro tech.. this is going to be big.. fast and exponential..

Btw.. I do own so ai stock and picked it up a few years back.. so not against it.. just realistically see pros and cons like all new technologies.

I do agree with this for real. We should absolutely be planning for it. The problem is we have clowns in office who are more worried about your kid's inner gender selection than running a functional country..

The answer is not to slow down innovation. That's a double down on bad planning, and would be a gift to all of our international competitors.

ETA: I mean for example, I started using chatgpt and some plugins at my business a couple of months ago. I full realize and appreciate that this technology will eliminate 30-50% of entry level white collar job necessity. I use excel alot, I have spdshts ontop of spdshts on top of spdshts, and I feel I'm extremely above average proficient in excel, bard can do an hour of excel work for me in 5 seconds. It's not that I dont know how to do it, it's just that Bard can do it in 95% less time; and Bard can output a formula to just copy and paste directly into excel. For the first time in my life, I thought, shite UBI might have to become a thing if productivity is going to launch off like this. I hate the idea of UBI, but I think we should be thinking about solutions to this AMAZING problem to have, rather than eliminating the innovation, fk that.

I work in construction, particularly with Walmart distribution centers. Symbotic is the company they’re using for this.
