Active Self Protection (YouTube)

He goes through the footage of a Las Vegas Walmart shooting back in 2014 (i think that's the year). A CCW tries to play hero, and ends up getting killed. I'm not saying what he did was wrong, but it makes you think on how to handle the situation. Every situation is different though. Especially if one of you're loved ones are involved.

If it were me and only me, and I had my sidearm on me, I'd be willing to help anyone in my vicinity get out. But I wouldn't go seeking out playing the hero, and chase the shooter clear across the store/building. I can't say the same if my wife or kid were with me and we were in different areas.

I would've posted this in the ODB, but I feel as if the main guys over there already know this. If you carry, and want to play the hero, be sure you're absolutely at spiritual peace with not only God, but with your family as well because it could possibly be your last day.

It will get you killed by the cops too. Or another CCW person.

How many lives were saved by the refocusing of the two shooters on the Good Samaritan? Even one life?

Best thing to do in these situations if you have a CCW is use it only to facilitate escape. Do not go after the shooter unless absolutely necessary. The biggest reason being when the cops come in they’re not going to ask if you’re a bad guy or not. If they see a gun, you’re getting dropped.

So what? That’s their choice. Everyone knows that if you’re carrying and choose to help intervene it can be dangerous. What exactly are you trying to suggest? That people shouldn’t conceal carry because doing so is more dangerous than just running away?

That people trying to play hero are often endangering themselves and others

I think putting yourself in danger to try and save other people is a commendable thing. Even if you fail and get yourself killed.

I am not going to fault the CCW guy in this scenario. However there are multiple lessons to be learned:

1- Let's start with awareness, he was a victim on tunnel vision, the women involved had her weapon out entering the store, it is in her right hand at her side. I doubt she had concealed it after entry. Also, she was way too calm - still pushing her buggy down the aisle as the shite was hitting the fan. IF you are going to get involved (I don't recommend it in this instance) you need to know what is all around you.

2 - He could have facilitated the egress of others in the store without a fast confrontation. There were many lives to save he could have help out.

3 - always, always, always assess the situation. I have no idea what his situation was it appears he is alone at the store. If so, stay away you CCW should be a "ticket" out of situations, not into them. There is a reason LEOs on scene don't rush into things. They want to get an idea of what they are going into. So should you.

I can't say I would not have engaged these people even though I recommend in this scenario you walk away. However, I have gone through and continue to increase my skill set in preparation of scenarios like this. The average Joe CCW probably doesn't send 10% of the rounds down range in a year that I do in a week. Even with that, I likely in this scenario would have stayed toward the front of the store making sure people were getting out.

It didn't appear to me that these two were on a killing spree - his first round was into the ceiling.

Indeed.

Right after college I moved home and my mom called me and said someone was in her backyard at 2am. I went to the backyard with a pistol NOT realizing she had also called the police.

Well, I checked the perimeter and no one was there. So I'm walking back to the house w/pistol in hand and the cop comes around the corner and has his .40 trained on my chest with a laser Almost ended badly.

Did the Walmart in El Paso not have guns ? Seems dangerous to try a mass shooting in a store with guns and ammunition. You wouldn’t need your own gun if you could get the ones from behind the counter.

People trying to help people who were in an auto accident sometime get killed by traffic trying to help people. The safest thing is to sit in your car and call emergency personnel. I still think highly of people stepping in to help and would appreciate someone putting themselves in danger to help my wife and/or children.
