The state of Florida on Thursday said it was suing the federal government to force it to let cruise lines restart sailings out of Florida ports.
“Today Florida’s fighting back,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a press event Thursday to announce the lawsuit against the federal government and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC has been blocking cruise ships from sailing in U.S. waters since the coronavirus outbreak was declared a pandemic in March of 2020, citing COVID-19-related risks.

DeSantis made the announcement at PortMiami, the world’s biggest cruise hub, with the state’s attorney general Ashley Moody by her side.
The lawsuit comes as Florida politicians and Florida-based cruise lines have become increasingly frustrated with the CDC for not allowing at least limited cruising to restart out of the state.
Cruising around the world ground to a halt in March of 2020 after the coronavirus outbreak was declared a pandemic and many countries went into nationwide lockdowns. It has begun bouncing back in recent months in a handful of places as some countries relax travel restrictions but not in North America, in large part due to a CDC prohibition on cruising in U.S. waters.
Florida politicians have noted the financial hardship to people who work for ports, cruise lines and related industries in the state as Florida-based ships sit idle. There have been no cruises out of PortMiami or any other Florida port in 13 months.

But the CDC says no.
Which leads to how the HELL can the CDC say no cruising??? (I've never been on one but still ...)

He's been correct on every decision so far. How would this be any different?

How can the CDC make anyone do anything

This is the same CDC that botched the early tests while preventing others from developing their own. This is the same CDC that didn't tell the dimwitted dem governors that it was a lethal idea to put covid patients into nursing homes.
They are a cluster of pompous and incompetent apparatchiks.

The are using the opposite of science and logic for most of their decisions.
However, they do have an ever-present, impending sense of Doom.

One more instance in which Greg Abbott is trailing the leadership of Desantis.
Galveston is a very busy cruise port, and I'm sure the port is missing out on a lot of tourist dollars. Even Houston, as many cruisers fly into the airport in order to cruise. Yet Abbott has been completely silent on the issue.
I hope there is a good and viable primary opponent in the next gubernatorial election. He has been a major disappointment.

They should be allowed but what kind of sadomasochist wants to go on a cruise.
Just fly me to that place and I'll drink the whole time instead of overpriced drinks and a petri dish everywhere else

CDC puts out "Guidance", which like most Federal agencies, such as OSHA for instance. Employers follow the guidance for fear of lawsuits arising from any employee claiming harm as a result of the Employer's neglect in not following the guidelines.
Lawyers rejoice.

It’s insane that the CDC, elected by no one, has absolute power over everything

That is what a regulatory state/nation has done to us.

These the same experts who are perplexed as to why open states are doing much better than shut down ones?
