Despite voting rights legislation that was designed to ensure that minorities can vote, the felony disenfranchisement laws remain as a potent example of structural racism.
Black News
I grew up knowing that if I committed a felony there would be multiple consequences with rights and privileges taken away. Why is it that everything is always turned into racism?

Didn't read the article. Couldn't get past this.

Anybody remember David Alan Grier's short lived show "Chocolate News"? shite was hilarious.

I kind of agree with you, but in fairness, the number of "felonies" has increased astronomically since the concept of taking away voting rights for felons was initially instituted.
The idea of it is that there are some crimes so heinous, you should not longer be a member of civil society even after serving a sentence. These crimes were, as you can imagine, limited to things like murder, rape etc. take a look at what we deem to be felonies these days.

I'm just curious, is any felony enough to have your voting privileges taken away?

I'd be ok with murder, rape, treason, kidnapping, pedo-related crimes and maybe a few others as being qualifying felonies.

I would too. I don't think felony possession of narcotics should automatically be a qualifying felony though.

Although making it into a race issue is absurd as usual, IMO if you do your time you should regain your right as a citizen to vote.

I understand some of the apprehension developed by recent changes in laws creating more felony charges and more felons. Those laws were passed mainly on the state levels and by state legislatures. That is where change needs to come from.
For instance 3 time loser status is one thing that has changed in more recent times that has added to these felony numbers.

Is It really a right if it can be taken away?

You, like I, was raised by caring parents or guardians and therefore knew the consequences to our actions.
Most felons, I'd bet, were not and have no clue as to these types of repercussions when validating whether to commit a crime or not.

If you have served your sentence then you should have your voting rights given back. It's simple and applies to everyone of all races. If you want to reintegrate a felon back into society then giving back voting rights after serving your sentence makes sense.

I'm not a fan of taking away the right to vote.
Politicians create and enforce laws, people go to jail and can't respond to the injustice by voting them out.
If it were just murder and forcible rape then that would be a different story.

First of all one needs to recognize that voting is a privilege and not a right. We take away privileges all of the time for offenses. Felony offenses are enacted because they are deemed especially harmful to society. Felons willfully reject the reasonable restrictions society places on its members' behavior. Why is it wrong to remove one of the most important privileges of society from those who willfully act against society's interests?
