“They were put into handcuffs by their wrists and ankles and treated as criminals before getting to these detention centers,”
They were criminals though?

Despite what the article above implies, it doesn’t take 35 years to gain U.S. citizenship.
Exactly. Whole lot of glossing over 35 years worth of likely ability to gain citizenship.

Something seems missing in the story. I wonder for what reasons were they denied after trying for so many years.
My first thought. Something here just doesn't add up. Has to be a criminal record prior to coming to the US or something. I'm not advocating for just admitting anyone that comes here, but the article makes it seem like the type of people that would make good citizen. I'm sure it's biased though.

While the couple tried numerous legal avenues to remain in the country over the years, including appeals to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Board of Immigration Appeals, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told The Orange County Register that the Gonzalezes had “exhausted all legal options to remain in the U.S. between March 2000 and August 2021,” and were ultimately in violation of immigration law.
Something smells if they were turned down by the ninth circus, the most liberal court in the country.

they’re law-abiding citizens
Not citizens and are criminals by breaking the law.

How much money did they pay into our system via income taxes?
None? Then get them the frick out of our country
How much money did they send to family members outside of the US over those 35 years?

Inexcusable irresponsibility on these people’s part.
And the hundreds of officials, agents, and officers who had to look the other way over the past 35 years.

Look at it from another way. What if i a us citizen went and lived illegally in Colombia for 35 years before they caught up with me. I doubt Colombian citizens would give 2 shits if i got kicked out.
