The policy announced on Friday has a goal of cutting back on nicotine levels in order to discourage addiction and lower the number of US smokers.

On the New York Stock Exchange, shares in Altria dropped by up to 17%, British American Tobacco's stock fell as much as 11%, and Philip Morris dropped by 7% before they all recovered some of their losses.

The goal, Mr Gottlieb added, is to "render cigarettes minimally addictive" by reducing the amount of the harmful and addictive chemical, which they say is the leading cause of preventable death in the US.

Show me deaths linked to cigarette smoking then show me deaths linked to toking.

Besides that's not a progressive issue, it's a freedom lovers' issue.

Next the FDA will disallow the use of cheese on burgers and ranch with wings. Im so glad I have the FDA to help me understand what I can and cant consume.

Well, one of them does cause a half million deaths a year. That said, I don't support this tactic for the same reason I support legal MJ. It's none of the governments business.

Just don't expect them to give flying frick when your prescriptions are unaffordable. They regulate, the drug companies make bank, the patient is screwed. We just need more government.

Is this just useless bureaucrats trying to justify their continued purpose? I mean, what percentage of the population coming of age are actually taking up smoking these days? It's gotta be minuscule by now, no?

Depending on how big of a decrease they're talking about and they'll probably create a large black market.

More tax revenue and a little boost for Phillip Morris and Altria.

Not to say it shouldn't be legal, but inhaling the byproducts of pretty much any kind of combustion is bad for you.

That's genius!,now tobacco users will use more of the products to satisfy their cravings. The Tobacco Companies sell twice as much, and The Government gets twice as much in taxes.

For the smokers,it means they will ingest twice as much tar( probably the most damaging thing in cigarettes) to get their nicotine fix.

I'm glad I was able to quit back years ago.
