he US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an emergency use authorization for chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat patients hospitalized with COVID-19. The drugs — which are used to treat malaria and other conditions — have been called game changers by President Donald Trump.

quote:

Who can the drugs be used to treat? The authorization is limited to patients who are currently hospitalized and weigh at least 50kg, or about 110 pounds. Under the emergency use authorization, health care providers must contact their local or state health department to access the drugs.

I’ve never rooted for a drug before, but I’m rooting like hell for chloroquine to work. As we all should be.

Nevada and Michigan should be last in line.

So the letter was issued Saturday and acknowledged in a press release Sunday. The news reports all look like they came out after Trump’s press conference. Why didn’t he mention this? Surely he knew at that time?

By now he's probably realized anything that comes out of his mouth will be politicized and twisted, and he's already said his peace on this.

Doesn’t want a run on the drugs? Get them to people who need the most first?

I thought I’d respond to the person who came up with the idea.

I really don't understand the reluctance to use this drug on a wider basis.

I understand that all drugs have side effects and this one is no exception.

But, this drug has been in use for decades and certainly there is ample information about which patients should not be given the drug.

Also, I heard one interview that indicated that the current study that is being conducted is going to be on patients with severe symptoms. But, in the same discussion one of the physicians stated that the drug was only effective when it is given in the early stages of infection.

If that is true, then the study is destined to have bad results.

The available information is very confusing.

It was the governors' idea to come up with the extraordinary step of pre-banning something that showed promise simply because a politician they don't like was getting behind it.

Don't blame me. It's not my job to look out for the welfare of their states.

All the millions of republicans in those states will be thrilled to know you’d be willing to let them suffer to make a point to the governor they didn’t vote for
