While the tariffs don’t help, there’s been like 5 or 6 consecutive years of high yields in both the USA and South America. The world has a surplus. Tariffs are just a convenient thing to bitch about.
And the bitching is working. With an MFP payment, soybeans go from a breakeven venture to a profitable venture in the neighborhood of $100+/acre.
eta: for the record, I’m a farmer, and don’t have any soybeans. A corn and cotton rotation is more profitable when you don’t factor in gov assistance, which is not guaranteed, but usually happens anyway.

No mfp payment this year
Without it last year most farmers don’t pay out.
Farming is the only industry in the history of the world whereas a product is produced and the producer has no say whatsoever in how much they charge consumers for their product.
When you nerds go to a bank yearly and borrow 7 digits to make a living, get back with me.

Farmers buying brand new John deers financed at 120 months is what did them in.

My understanding is that there will be an MFP payment, but now with all of the PP going on, it’s thrown a wrinkle in. Is it all going to be rolled into that disaster bill?
It’s all kind of vague and jumps around, so the best thing to do is to plant what you think you can make a reasonable return with and if they decide they want to dole out some money, well okay.

A corn and cotton rotation is more profitable

It’s looking more likely that there will be. We don’t grow soybeans either, though. Its best to assume you get nothing and be pleasantly surprised when you do.
If it’s such a gravy train everyone else is welcome to join in whenever they want.

Yeah that’s what it was jd payments ... bad managers of money are bad managers of money.
Regardless what business you’re in.

I agree with that.
Only thing farmers can do now is manage expenses best you can and hope for yield.

Cotton is surprisingly forgiving of what dirt it can be grown on. Corn is the finicky one.
I can consistently grow 3 bale cotton on well-drained, irrigated clay. I struggle to push over 180 on corn on it, though.

Sounds like there will be some cheap tractors and F250s with truck nuts.

You can call Trump stupid all you want. He is a lot of things, but "stupid" really isn't one of them.
I am a moderate, that leans conservative, and if Obama or Clinton had taken on the Chinese in this manner, I would have loudly supported them too.
China has cheated so long on trade, that it seems normal to be fricked over by them. Trump, FINALLY, said "enough!"

I’m sure relying on other countries for food will work out great

Farmers do three things.
1. Annually fricking poor mouth.
2. Live in giant fricking homes
3. Drive expensive cars.

No doubt. It’s only a relatively recent thing for us. I’ve got nothing but respect for the ones who made it without the tools we have now. They were/are some tough, good men.
