...you’ve never seen a Republican fight back like this. You got used to burying the Jebs and Romneys of the world, and they just took it. They were petrified of counter-attacking for fear of what the media would say. Along comes Trump and he is immune to your old tricks; if anything they make him stronger.
Setting aside your dislike for the man’s politics, you have to admit that Trump’s resolve is something we haven’t seen in a long time in the GOP.

I’ve often wondered with this sets a trend for candidates going forward. Looking at the last two previous elections, fake war hero and Mittens went full on beta. And lost.
GEOTUS said to hell with that approach, went scorched earth and kicked Hillary in the balls.
I do think Trump is a very unique candidate in that he has tons of money and had clout before running. Not so sure some baw in Missouri or the like would have similar results.

This more than anything. Repubs endured 8 years of W being hammered relentlessly and never fighting back. They were so fricking tired of defending a guy who wouldn’t defend himself. Along comes McCain and Romney twisting themselves into knots not to offend Obama and refusing to defend themselves and voters like me said to hell with you. You don’t command support and respect when you let someone use you as a doormat. The only reason I started paying attention to Trump was because the man wasn’t afraid to brawl and fight back.

I think it’s likely Trump is a once in a generation candidate. The last Republican like this was Reagan.
After Trump, it’s likely the republicans return to the loser betas.

The media and Clinton pushed GHWB around hard the entire time. He was terrible in the debates. Honestly, he acted like Hillary did in 2016, like he really shouldn’t even have to run.
Honestly, it’s absurd to call someone who as a teenager flew combat aircraft off a carrier against the Japanese in WW2 a wimp. But the media did, over and over again. And it stuck, partly because GHWB was too genteel and didn’t fight back. Plus, he was elitist and socially distant.
He was getting killed in the debates by Clinton and acted like he didn’t care and the whole thing was beneath him.

Don't forget that his approval numbers after the gulf war were at one point in the 90's. They were so high that a lot of dems didn't want to run against him for the presidency. That is how Bill Clinton, the hick gov from Arkansas ended up with the nomination. HW was so damn complacent, that his staff had to beg him to campaign, and by the time he got around to it Slick had built up considerable momentum.
