Esper is following the Pompeo playbook by currying favor with Trump to keep his job for more than a year. Regardless, Spencer’s actions were insubordinate and he should have been fired.

He's lucky he isn't being court martialed
When you're in the military and the President of the United States gives a direct order, saying "We aren't demoting this guy and you aren't sripping him of his rank/role"

So you admit he’s doing his job, yet somehow that is “currying favor” with Trump?
How about he continue to do his job to the expectation of the boss if he wants to keep his job.
