I went from skeptical to fascinated and now to borderline obsessed with this story. It stretches the limits in both directions. It's beyond unbelievable, to the point of almost being comical. But then you realize that some people actually believe this really happened, and you have to feel sorry for citizens that go around with that many snakes in their head on a daily basis. Imagine having a view of your own country that was so jaded that even this story seemed believable.

I saw this on the news this morning and immediately said bullshite. Then, they said this dude was gay too, which just increased my confidence that this is a complete fabrication.

Maybe, in his own mind, Smollett heard "THIS IS MAGA COUNTRY" ringing in his ears after being slapped around?

Really does sound like it. His mistake is going overboard on his "story" and thus bringing more attention and scrutiny to it. Maybe he thinks any publicity is good publicity.

Not only that but the story can be proven false, even with the person admitting it was a fabrication, and some will still act like it actually happened. They still believe it.

But they also reported that after the suspects left the seen he self-transported to the hospital. Did that happen after he ran home and called the cops and gave a statement? If so, why didn't the cops bring him to the hospital or call an ambulance?
Why did he still have the rope around his neck? would you be thinking to leave it on as evidence? or if you were afraid for your life would you rip that beeatch off the second the suspects were gone?
If they poured liquid on him it would be in his clothes and at the scene on the ground, even if dried up they could identify said liquid and test for it at the scene.
If a rope was used there would more than likely be rope fibers at the scene. If you've ever used rope it tends to leave evidence if it is made from natural fibers. Synthetic possibly not.
If he was bleeding there would possibly be blood at the scene, especially if they had him on the ground.
I know this isn't a murder investigation, but there's plenty to investigate without witnesses or footage, and I know most of what I'm thinking will only give or take credit from the victim's story, but any of that evidence could possibly be used to tie the suspects to the scene in question.
Just some thoughts from someone with no professional detective training
