Small government would be great. Return to what the founders wanted, limited government whose main reason for existence is defense of the country. Most other stuff should be handled by the states. If you want a lot of state control of your life, live in a place like California. If you want the government to stay out of your business then live in a red state.

Ill answer your question with another question. What government departments do a good job? The vast majority are horribly run and would be much better if private companies were given the tasks. Add requirements and conditions but for the most part government should get out of the way.
