I have always been against the entire concept of a hate crime because of the absurd rabbit holes it leads us down. We end up fighting about whether something is a hate crime, when it's unnecessary and when all right-thinking individuals agree that a crime has been committed. Particularly nasty motives can always be considered at sentencing. Let's move away from having actual though police - because that is what hate crimes require - and get back to punishing criminals, regardless of what -isms motivated their criminal conduct.

Bernie's campaign speaker is the worst of the worst.

I have no problem with what Don said. Not everyone believes in "evil".

Behavior in itself is not stupid. It's the results of the actions that determine that, so if "we" used the same tactics of ramming things thru and the results of those polices had a net positive effect, that would not be "as stupid as they are". It would be more like "undoing the stupid".

I don't believe we are made "evil" by our experiences.

I believe we start there, and get made civil

I agree. It only appears to make sense with crimes like graffiti or vandalism where the effect on the victim isn't just economic. The the punishment goes from a fine and probation to some jail time. In a case involving kidnapping and torture it really isn't necessary. Who cares "why" they did it, the crime is bad enough on its own.

I think the guy who said it was "man's inhumane behavior towards man" was closer. Seeing or doing something shocking becomes intoxicating. Unless one of these kidnappers has a personality disorder, they likely all have a history of doing something shocking and illegal that escalates over time. It is part of being human, not some sort of supernatural quality.

So let me see if I understand this correctly.

It is ONLY a hate crime when happens to a black person.

Pretty sure that is what she is saying here.

Without watching it, let me take a wild guess because Insee this coming a mile away. If the clip is a panel discussion, there will be at least one person that says how terrible this was and there is no excuse for it and then say that Trump's racist and hateful rhetoric has created the environment for things like this to happen.

Am I close?

fair idea- I don't think civility is natural. We come out selfish and concern with meeting our basic needs.

Even with such crimes, you don't really need the hate crime element. The intent element can me more generalized, such as "with intent to threaten or intimidate." Of course, there are 1st Am limitations but that's also true with hate crimes.

By the end of the conversation the whole thing was Trump's fault for fanning the racial divide in America. CNN's take is so expected.

The opposite direction in this context would be executing law and order at the ground level. So yes, and if you think that's stupid, you're probably in the crosshairs.
