Sure. But the government shouldn't use unconstitutional methods to do this.

It was a hearing on un-American activities, in order to bring it to light in the midst of a Cold War. He was doing exactly what we all should have been doing at the time, instead of looking for a literal invasion, uncover who's already invaded and entrenching themselves in American life, and uncover potential plots to subvert Americans. Again, turns out that they were. This country is living proof of it. Nobody served time, but many were exposed, and good, albeit barely scratching the surface. In the end, the subversion continued, we were made to feel guilty for exposing them in front of the entire country, and American children got their constant diet of leftist drivel pumped in their heads at ever increasing doses as time went on, and here we are, a country that vaguely resembles it's former self, and is even ashamed of being a country. How dare we.

socialism became a dirty word.

Thats why they changed it to "liberal", and then to "progressive". There's something to learn about that. If something is good and viable, why the need to change the name? It's like a criminal who needs to create alias once their dirty deeds become known.

Dude - a man with such a tiny mind - not ought take it out for walk for the whole world to see. You do know that liberal is really the economic system you most cherish. The one you flout, embrace, and vote for? That Liberal Economics has changed... quote: change the name? It's like a criminal who needs to create alias once their dirty deeds become known.... until the policy is now hidden and changed to conservative, deregulatory, oand such... Get can over it though - because it can also be used the way you like an prefer - that's the way words work.

now back to McCarthy>>>>>

Lot's of people got black listed for just being a friend of a friend. A mere accusation could ruin you. With no proof, with suspicion alone you might be labeled subversive. And with a mass hysteria of media drive 'red scare' this was enough to out you being for un-American and promptly unemployed....

and back to the OP>>>>>

The only difference today is the media is split both ways and there's still enough thinking people requiring concrete proof - to protect the nation - from the walking dead.

(and yes i hate the bitch that won - almost as much as the one that lost.)

The real story of McCarthy was not while things were going on in the 50s. It was the re-writing of US High School History books in the 70s. He was a footnote prior to that. Then he became a major figure depicted as the most horrible human being in American history.

When McCarthy was embroiled in the Commie controversy half of Americans still didn't have TV sets.
