Yes, the comparisons are over the top, but no the renovation is not necessary. The people's house does not need to be some cold, gaudy, grand location.
My family & I thoroughly enjoyed the tour we took of the WH a decade ago. The intimate setting created by the smaller rooms and venues is much more welcoming and simply reflects a warm, pleasant environment.
