I don’t feel bad about it, but I do think that it’s just suddenly unavailable will create chaos, and some true misery for children who are already in troubled circumstances.

I have the Jean Val Jean theory of public assistance. When he stole the silver from the church, and the priest let him go. He asked him, what do I owe you, and the priest said - be a better man. Getting free shite from the government* can never provide that kind of moral responsibility from the recipient.

If we have to have food assistance, the food provided should contain one ingredient. Otherwise it will just subsidize Little Debbie and create unhealthy people. Not a drop of it should go to noncitizens. Nothing.

There is zero reason an able bodied adult should be on SNAP. Pick up extra hours or cut back on your spending if you can't afford groceries

It's become a lifestyle for so many people

I agree. Government programs like SNAP creates enablers. It can be an addiction.

Private foundations and churches would be much better positioned to determine real need. Government needs to get out of the charity business.

What's interesting is that here in Baton Rouge alone, we have tons of resources for people to have food, and it has nothing to do with SNAP. The BR Food Bank is a huge warehouse that is stocked to the ceiling with food. A few churches in my area also run food banks a few days a week where people can grab a few items. St. Vincent de Paul obviously runs a soup kitchen and shelters. All of our local grocery stores (and many schools) do special collections around the holidays to create meal baskets for those in need.

Local agencies are better suited to determine true needs and to address them.

Maybe, but I remember seeing housing that had been provided for homeless that I'm pretty sure didn't require anybody to give up any addictions. Of course they completely trashed it within a few weeks.

I feel bad for the people who legitimately need it.

I don't feel bad for the people who are only getting it because it's one more bloated federal program that allows too many people to be a part of it.

I think it has shown that reform is much needed. I believe we should change these things:

Only allow certain foods to be used with it, like fruits, vegetables, cheap cuts of meat, rice, canned goods. No ready to serve meals (frozen etc). Limit processed foods. No candy, chips, sodas etc.

Limit time it is available to 1 year. After you are on it for a year you cannot receive it again for 5 years. It needs to be a safety net not a lifestyle.

Felony charges with at least 10 years in prison for selling or buying the funds on the card. No parole. If you dont need the money for food you should not be able to sell it to someone so you can get your hair and nails done or get cash and buy drugs or liquor.

Not one bit. I shop sales for meats and canned goods. I buy store brands where I can and bulk at Sams. Trying to save and make my paycheck go farther.

I get behind people able and capable of working, but don't, in grocery lines buying soda, chips, candy, name brand items, expensive cuts of meat. Etc with snap. They then dont get charged with taxes. They have smartphones, wear designer clothes, and drive new cars. Makes my blood boil. I feel sorry for elderly on a set income, but not for able bodied persons too lazy to work or find better paying jobs.

Agreed. It’s really not that hard to find a well paying job. People are just so damn lazy these days and don’t want to work; particularly young people.
