You just said national security was the goal. Which is it, and if it's "free trade" you need to define what you mean by that.

Both are the goal but national security takes precedent. If national security can be achieved (e.g., quantity and quality of steel for ships and aluminum for planes) can be achieved via free trade then everyone is happy. The issue with China is however they can't compete with us on an even playing field. They need to tilt the rules in their favor in terms of slave labor, exploiting the environment, stealing IP, currency manipulation, closed economic markets, and/or CCP government subsidies.

Need to fight back and make trade more fair and tariffs are one tool in the toolbox. It's not a good idea to remove the tool from the toolbox before you sit down at the negotiating table. If you do remove tariffs you are already at a negotiating disadvantage. It's pure dumb shite business practice to telegraph your positions to the counterparty before opening remarks concerning trade.

Which is decided by "deep state elites" and will never benefit the rank and file worker.

Why give more power to the security complex?

Again, what does "free trade" mean? No two countries are ever the same and there will always been inherent advantages. There's no such thing as an even playing field.

More importantly, as I asked earlier, do you understand how tariffs give the federal government more power?

Correct.

The US can never compete with Vietnam or Mexico for labor costs. We let them mfg the cheap stuff which benefits Americans.

GumboPot is getting excited about the prospect of nation building to make things “fair” again.

We hate the deep state but want to give them more power.

Makes sense.

Why limit this to goods? Why not labor?

Should we open the borders for cheap labor, like no tariffs brings cheap goods?

Its the cheap labor that allows us to by cheap shite.

China has almost priced themselves out of the global labor market, companies are moving to Vietnam, etc.

If someone loses their job to uneducated, unskilled foreign workers, they need to up their game.

I can name at least 5.

Name 6.

It would be more challenging to name 6 that are fit to serve.

Trump's cognitive ability is fine.

I'm sure it is. Will it make it to 2028? Who knows? Sucks that we give ourselves that worry.

These old guys should give it up at 70. Anyone who's that addicted to power (lifetime politicians) is someone to be feared.

Well that sounds great, provided there was someone else worth a damn running.

What if they lose their job because there are no tariffs on goods being imported that are created by Uyghur slaves?

How should they up their game to compete with a company that uses essentially free labor? That’s obviously not something that can be done here, so how can a domestic company “up their game” in this scenario to be competitive?

Be specific.

Maybe increase marketing towards the patriotic "We the People" market who claim they're willing to subsidize America first. Good luck.

We are in a high tech economy, it doesnt matter why they lose their jobs, they dont have the ability to get another because they kept sitting around waiting for the gubment to help save their industry.

Its corporate welfare at the expense of the working man. MAGA. Retrain your workers instead of giving corporate handouts.
