MINNEAPOLIS – Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin spent his first night in prison since his conviction for murdering George Floyd segregated from the other inmates, a Minnesota Department of Corrections spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Chauvin, found guilty Tuesday in connection with Floyd's death on May 25, is being housed under "administrative segregation" status for the fired Minneapolis police officer's own safety while being held at the Oak Park Heights Prison until sentencing in June, said agency spokeswoman Sarah Fitzgerald.
He is residing in the Administrative Control Unit, "the state's most secure unit," Fitzgerald said.
"Administrative segregation is used when someone's presence in the general population is a safety concern," she added.
Jurors in Hennepin County District Court found the 45-year-old Chauvin guilty on all counts — second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Judge Peter Cahill read the verdicts at 4:07 p.m. Chauvin then had his bail revoked, was handcuffed behind his back and led out of the courtroom by sheriff's deputies.
Chauvin was turned over to the Department of Corrections and booked about 4:55 p.m. into Oak Park Heights while he awaits sentencing. It is the same prison where he was housed after his initial arrest.

It’s the right decision for the jail, and probably what Chauvin would have requested.

I think the the higher courts punt the case due to social/political pressure.

I came here for Epstein and I wasn’t disappointed. Well done!

So he’s going to be living in isolation basically.
I might prefer being killed.

You think he’s the only cop or white collar criminal that’s in that situation?

He will probably be treated fairly well by the officers there, at least by prison standards.

He’s the only cop in his situation. Don’t play dumb. Unless you are that dumb.

The other guy was saying that Chauvin won't be the only person in this administrative segregation unit, so there will likely be some level of socialization. He isn't at Florence or anything.

There is a whole wing designed for these people. It's a mixture of people that feel threaten for a variety of reasons (police, attorneys, people wanted by gangs, those that have threats made against them by other prisoners, etc.)
The issue is that yes, it's an extremely locked down facility with not much movement to programs, etc. Im sure he would much rather be in a lower security facility, but that might not be safe for him.
Its possible after some time in the system that he may feel safe enough to be transferred, but who knows.
