His seeing eye’s retina started to detach (as a lasting result of his seal injuries) so he needed emergency surgery or he would be completely blind.

All of peoples retina does this . If it tears to quickly then that’s a huge problem . Mine tore faster than normal and I enjoy constant floaters that drive me nuts. Good luck for him
