It’s biggest issue is that the projections assume a symmetrical, normal distribution of daily death totals (increase and decrease parallel one another) when the reality is it appease the he much more “fat-tailed” with more kurtosis and, more importantly, more skewness on the backside (slower decline).

The two European countries (Spain and Italy) I’ve watched closest have definitely had the slower decline you described. Their numbers are doing significantly better than two weeks ago but the decline has been far slower than the increase.

It’s because of when/how they started testing.

We all started testing basically in the middle of this thing, but we are watching the decline in real time, so it will be slower.

They've been sticking around 400 deaths a day for a while

This is the link to the US state level tracker that I have shared via Google Drive. Chromdome's State Level COVID-19 Daily Tracker
This is the link to the COVID-19 Country tracker that I have shared on Google Drive. Chromdome's COVID-19 Daily Tracker

The source for the data is https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
The source for the testing data is from https://covidtracking.com/data/

4/18/20 UPDATE: I am changing these updates to show the data for the US without NY State numbers included. The information and graphs presented in my updates going forward will all be from the perspective of omitting NY State results. All of the original data is still present on the tracker linked above

If deaths don't taper off fairly significantly and fairly quickly, we will approach/break 60k by May 1st. I think 1500/day average would do it.

I was optimistic coming out of the weekend, but now I don't know. Could be a long May, too.

So, is 65k or 70k the new number to try to stay under for this acute phase of the outbreak?

Realistically, it is looking like 70k, even with a much improved picture in May.

The number of new cases remained flat, while the number of deaths was down from yesterday (Tuesday Spike) it was still the 3rd highest number of deaths to date. NY accounted for 19.1% of the new cases today with 5.7K while the rest of the country saw 24.2K new cases, a 3K increase over yesterday.

Deaths saw a similar pattern, the 4th highest day ever with 2.3K across the country, NY accounted for 661 of those, 28.2%. The rest of the nation had its 3rd highest number of deaths at 1.6K

The mortality rate continues to climb.

There was a large spike in the number of daily tests with the day's total coming in at 311K. The number of positive tests remained in its normal range of 27K. California, Florida, and a few other states reported a large number of negative test results today. Far outside their normal testing numbers. It will be interesting to see if it returns to normal tomorrow or if this is a sign of new capacity coming online.

I want to see some downward trending, I was expecting to see more visible signs of it by this point.

I think it gives a lot of weight to the slow decline on the backside of the curve theory.

Even though I'm an observer on this one, I've always hated crisis management.

Fighting to get the least bad outcome is terrible for morale.

Where’s the volume coming from on the deaths?

It seems so absolutely regional. Even micro regional.

Discouraging numbers but the amount of tests administered artificially increased the positives test results today. I think the metric to look at today would be hospitalizations and ventilators. If those remained flat of decreased then we’re still going in the right direction.

My only concern with the data is how accurate are these state agencies and how liberal are they being with relating everything cold to the Chinese Flu.

1300 deaths in 8 states.

The next 7 states have between 25 to 75 deaths each.

12 states with between 10 and 24 deaths.

19 states with single digit deaths.

5 states with no deaths.

Bass — question you may not know. Is this really super contagious OR do we have more people than we think that are asymptomatic passing this on without knowing??

Our home is ~75% positive at this point. Holding at four deaths and now 6 in the hospital (two because families requested they be sent; not because they were any worse off than the other). Yikes.

Last question: why do they keep screaming about testing? With symptoms YES. Antibody testing YES. Testing other than that though (unless it’s rapid for medical personnel to clear to go into work) doesn’t work — I can be negative today and positive in two days. What good does that type testing do? Meaning you can’t get tested every time you want to leave your house/go into a business.

Both probably. The Marion prison has 1800 positive cases. When it gets in a nursing home, it seems to go straight to a 70% infection rate.

I’m still suspicious that a flu vaccine makes you susceptible to it.

The press is comprised of idiots.

I forgot this Crichton quote until someone posted it here the other day.

quote:

Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them.

In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know. That is the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect.

I'd point out it does not operate in other arenas of life. In ordinary life, if somebody consistently exaggerates or lies to you, you soon discount everything they say. In court, there is the legal doctrine of falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus, which means untruthful in one part, untruthful in all. But when it comes to the media, we believe against evidence that it is probably worth our time to read other parts of the paper. When, in fact, it almost certainly isn't. The only possible explanation for our behavior is amnesia.

Really?? What makes you think that? The majority of our residents do take the vaccine and much of the staff as well. If we don’t you've got to wear a mask from October 1 to April 30

And our governor is screaming for testing testing. But he’s an idiot so that may be his problem as well.

So Trump puts it in the governors hands on reopening. He then questions/criticizes some governors plans.

Sounds about right

I don’t think he criticized — I think he just didn’t agree but it’s not his decision.
