I don’t think there’s much reform here.

DACA trade offs.

Is this really MAGA?

The good:

quote:

Under the Goodlatte bill, E-Verify — the system that prevents employers from hiring illegal aliens over Americans — would be mandatory throughout the country, making it the first DACA-related legislation to include the provision.

quote:

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would be required to alert Americans that their Social Security number is being used in the workforce.

But what if the SSN belongs to a deceased person?

The bad:

quote:

While ending the Diversity Visa Lottery program, whereby 50,000 foreign nationals are randomly allowed to come to the U.S. every year, the Goodlatte bill gives businesses 55,000 more foreign workers to import every year to take American jobs.

quote:

U.S., legal immigration levels would only be reduced from the more than one million immigrants who enter the country every year to about 800,000 a year.

The ugly:

quote:

Additionally, the legislation creates an entirely new work visa program for the agricultural industry to keep wages low and outsource American jobs.

The only great aspect so far:

quote:

Under the legislation, chain migration — which has imported more than 9.3 million foreign nationals to the U.S. in the last decade — would be ended and confined to only spouses and the minor children of newly naturalized citizens.

But this too seems to have many loopholes.

No voter ID talk either?

I’ll pass on this.

Think like the enemy. Use the tactic that has brought us down so low. Incrementalism. Never give them something so obvious that they can easily rally much opposition to. If they resist the small things with loud voices, they seem unreasonable and extreme. Keep nudging forward.

Because immigration is one of the biggest drivers of long-term economic growth

Just like slavery was in the Antebellum South, right???
"Them slaves are good for business, boy. You know what those cotton britches would cost if we had to pay good Southern baws to pick the cotton?"

You think like a slave owner.

when we start fining businesses for knowingly, or unknowingly, hiring illegals, then it will work itself out. but the businesses line politicians' pockets, so the last thing they will ever do is what's in the average American's best interest.

Correct, anyone that has studied China knows we have to up immigration to even attempt to keep pace.

China is a growing society with 4x our population and nearly our economy. China as a society (coordinated government and industry) is committed to overtake us. They see themselves as the rightful world leader and are ready to retake their position from 100 years ago.

America as a closed society will not produce enough babies and we will fall behind. We need more Americans.

No slavery was a short-term driver and a long-term anchor, it kept the South from developing a competitively diversified economy

Also slaves were taken here against their will and immigrants aren't but these are minor details I'm sure

Great so it’s an economic issue? In that case I suppose we should limit immigration to folks who have desirable skills and education?

who cares if we "fall behind?" we have the infrastructure and ingenuity to sustain ourselves for the long haul. I, for one, don't care for overpopulation and I'm tired of immigrants not assimilating. we will never be united until we stop mass immigration. we've got enough problems without bringing more people into the country.

We don't need to be bigger to be better. we need to revamp our whole education system from top to bottom. that's the most important thing.

How many of those are immigrants?

If they are immigrants, are they there because they want to assimilate?

Or, are they there to take advantage of China’s welfare system (sarcasm intended)?

The fact is, unless the US grows it will fall behind China. Now, immigration is not the only answer but I don’t see Americans cranking out 8 babies per family either.

Hell, it won’t be long after China that India and other high population countries who have focused their economies start nipping at us.
