To me the interview reads like it happened later.
The dad turned him in then they go talk to the family and roommate
Roommate would’ve been communicating with him prior and didn’t give him up

Discord started as a gaming server for gamers to have voice chat. It got popular and over the years has become mainstream. Anyone who needs group voice chats uses it now. Business, hobbyists, any kind of interest group, etc.
