A federal appeals court ruled Friday to uphold a Florida law requiring up to 1 million felons in the state to finish paying fines and fees before they are eligible to vote.

The 10-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals decided in a 6-4 ruling to reverse a lower court judge’s decision that gave Florida felons the right to vote regardless of outstanding legal obligations.

The ruling, which came as a disappointment to voting rights activists, comes less than two months before the November election.

Looks like George, Michael, Zuck, Jack, Larry, Sergey, and Jeff are going to have to cut bigger checks now.

Why?

I would much prefer only allowing tax payers the right to vote than not allowing felons.

No. 4 Constitutional Amendment Article VI, Section 4. Voting Restoration Amendment This amendment restores the voting rights of Floridians with felony convictions after they complete all terms of their sentence including parole or probation. The amendment would not apply to those convicted of murder or sexual offenses

Date Effective: January 8, 2019
Yes: 5,148,926 (64.55%)
No: 2,828,339 (34.45%)

In mid-2019 Republican Governor DeSantis signed a bill into law which originated in the Florida Senate, SB 7066, which required that "people with felony records pay 'all fines and fees' associated with their sentence prior to the restoration of their voting rights"

What else would you call it? A million potential voters.. Florida GOP was desperate to keep them away from the polls so they created a new law to stop these people from voting.

Next thread down: there is no systemic racism in the US!

This thread: celebrating non-violent felons having their right to vote taken away because minorities overwhelmingly vote democrat

And if they weren't able to vote before the mid-2019 bill, why did they bother passing it? Hint: it is because they were eligible to vote

If you were convicted, fined $5k, and sentenced to 3 years.. that should be it.

You shouldn't lump in court costs, restitution for goods purchased, etc. Unless your goal is to stop them from voting?

But let's be honest: that is what it is all about. Stopping democrats from voting. It's not racism.. it's just political gain.
