Not only could it happen again, I am certain it will happen again. Just looking into how fricking insane the Scientologists are and how fricking evil David Miscavige is, I wouldn’t rule them out for a Jonestown massacre.
Then you have to think what our generation will experience, and it’s the biggest thing ever: we will likely see Technological Singularity. That is mankind creating intelligence greater than itself overnight. Basically man will create God. I thoroughly expect when we know that Singularity is less than 5 or so years away that there will be shite tons of cults like Jonestown and there will be tons of efforts to kill the people seeking to bring it to fruition or under their control. They will seek to destroy it or see it as Armageddon. And then others will seek to worship the Singularity itself. Maybe not by praying to it, but wishing to become one with it once it comes into being. The mid-2030s-2050s I expect to be a turbulent time.
