Ask them how much debt they have.
Most people are stupid. This leads to insecurity/envy resulting in living outside of their means.

Since 2000:
The Average American income has grown 15%
The average home cost in America has risen 170%
The average Automobile has risen 35%
Food costs have risen 90%
But…. The standard of living in 2025 is the same. Lol

Edit to add: how old are you?

Actually have put around 220k miles on mine. Haven’t had a car note in 15 years. It’s getting close to time.
I know some well-off people with low-profile rides… but still don’t think any poor people are riding around in G-wagons.

Ummm, this all correlates to people being able to.
A) Have Children
B) Buy a home.
Yeah people are waiting but the 5 year change in average age of owning a home after COVID is straight up an affordability issue.

This is the difference between comfortable people and poorer people. And why poorer people aren't comfortable.

To be fair, median is different from average which is what the other guy said.
Also that’s awesome, but $85k household admittedly seems rough if that is the norm in this day and age.

I don’t think this is true of all poor people. But yes, many people are incredibly fiscally irresponsible.

If the average is only up 15%, then that would negate the argument of an ever increasing wealth gap.
The extremes heavily influence means (which is why I used median. I figured mean would be even more so of an increase).
15% over 25+ years sounds like BS.
I checked. Mean income in 2000 was $37k. Mean income in 2025 is $121k.
I asked about the age because wages inflation is grounded and understood by anyone who has prepared taxes the past 25 years.
Only a liar or a 25 year old would be that far removed from reality.

I'd like to see a comparative chart of education and marriage.

That’s “household” income, which is different from personal income. Also, I can go to 10 different sources, and get 10 different answers. So… let’s just take the average of all the sources and say individual income has gone up 40–50%.
And…I’m 65, retired, sold my business 3 years ago, so I live very comfortably. I’m not worried about myself, but do worry about my children, and grandchildren.

Your second sentence here is the reason the first isn’t true.
Also the rest of your logic for the most part is correct, but your numbers are off.
Nominally median income nearly doubled, but inflation has been such an issue the past 20 years that real median only went up around 15% per US census.
This country both left & right would be riding high on a heater + shite wouldn’t be nearly as divided as it has been if real median income had actually doubled the past 20 years.

I don’t think I need a chart for this. Going out on a limb & gonna guess people are more educated and less married
