You would see departments take on less responsibility to protect themselves.....like no officers assigned to schools.

Really, school assignment is now a dangerous job? Most LE officers get off on shite like bum rushing a drug den....that's why they take a dangerous job making $35K/ year. Sadly Parkland had the wrong guy.

Case law?

I understand that it was a shitty situation. And that officer has no business in law enforcement. I agree he deserves ridicule and is liable civilly.

But from a criminal standpoint, I dont think it follows the law.

Most agencies will assume the danger but pull back when you increase criminal and civil liability.

This we agree on.

It was a shitty situation. His duty was to protect those kids. Court case wise, the USSC says he has no responsibility to defend those kids. Criminally, I would think malfeasance in office(he's sworn in as a LEO), dereliction of duty, criminal negligence could all be brought up. I'm not a lawyer though.

Assuming he were trained and had clear expectations of how he would respond to a live shooter scenario, he may have legal trouble. I do agree, however, that cowardice is likely not a criminal offense (in this case).

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I was bitterly disappointed when the SCOUTS ruled law enforcement has no expectation of facing danger. That's like saying a race car driver doesn't have to drive fast. Makes no sense to me

Dude. And the proper, expected move, after you converge is what? Remember now, we all pretty much agree that the officer in Broward is a sorry SOB for sitting while these kids were being slaughtered. Now you are the first, and at present only officer responding to a man with a gun call at a grocery store.

Is the proper, expected move going to be for you to wade in, backup or no, when you hear shots fired in the grocery store? I said I wasn’t a cop, I didn’t say I haven’t ever watched a cop show on TV.

For both Sheriff's office I worked with, you couldn't be a security guard for football games, Walmart, casino or anywhere else unless you were POST certified. If he manned a post as school resource office, he was carrying a POST certification. If not, that sheriff needs to be investigated.

LOL. Watching a cop show on TV gives you even less of an opinion on what REALLY happens.

I have eyes. You don’t have to know what really happens to know that the grocery store situation will almost always result in a standoff, not the first cop there advancing and attacking the shooter. Come on, man.

That's a pretty big hurdle to overcome

Malfeasance requires act of corruption

Dereliction of duty not a law

And criminal negligence is a stretch due to a lack of recklessness act by the officer

Here is a computer overlay of where everyone was during the shooting.

There is also a more detailed reenactment of Cruz's moves during the shooting.

One of them shows Peterson just standing outside casually as kids are trapped in the building he standing outside of.

Cops response to shooting.

at around 2:28pm Peterson ordered everyone to stay 500 feet away.

Peterson never moves from where he was taking cover. His inaction caused at least 7 kids to lose their lives.

Makes me sick to watch that. The outrage of him sitting there while he knows kids are most likely being shot to pieces comes right back! He belongs in prison.

Here are Cruz's movements with the time stamps on them. Peterson should have entered the building at 2:23.

Peterson would have easily saved 6 lives.

But he just calmly stayed outside while children he was paid to protect were being slaughtered.

Cruz's movements.
