As far as I'm concerned, people living in those areas put up those statues and people that aren't from those areas are tearing the statues down.

I wasn't aware this guy was a subject for any statues or memorials, nor his position on slavery or blacks. I suspect I'm with the majority in this respect.
Given that, and assuming you happen to be white, you are either on top of your Google game or have the most highly refined case of white guilt around.
i appreciate your candor, but, to be equally candid, i didnt know about Stephens because of my google game. he was the VP, he's not exactly some obscure historical footnote. people here probably dont know about him because they dont want to know about him.

which i dont get.

no one here should have any "guilt" about the civil war. i have zero. thats the exact same number of slaves i owned.

no one on either side of my family even got to the US until the 1930's, but even if my ancestors were the ones whipping Africans to force them onto ships, the frick does that have to do with me?

my only connection to slavery is standing in the same general area as where someone did horrible things 200 years ago.

yes, thats awful.

wasnt me.

i have no white guilt. at all. because im not a part of the confederacy. no one else here was either, so i dont understand the point in defending it, or pretending it was something it wasnt.

again, the very "foundation" and "cornerstone" of the confederate government, was slavery.
quote:

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition."
when you defend the confederacy, thats what youre defending, thats what youre aligning yourself with.

so why do it?

how does that help anyone here?

what is the point?

the only reason i can see to do it would be if you happen to agree with those views about black people, which is not exactly something id want to brag about.

Only in the mind of the deranged is a memorial to the dead considered a participation trophy.

I guess this is a pathetic Okinawan participation trophy too, huh?

Why is this issue being fought now, in 2017?

Americans are running out of real problems to bellyache about, so some scrounge for issues that aren't really issues.

The loser argument is awful.

If I am in a battle and get killed does someone eventually call me the loser in that skirmish and now I'm in second place and unworthy of being memorialized.

Yes, that's a reach but this whole thing is getting out of hand. Where is the logical end?

shite, I used logical. Forget it.

A lot of the pro- and anti- confederate arguments ppl use are kinda illogical tbh.

Main reason I stay in the treason lane in this debate. It's the most logical stance imo.

I wasn't even talking about the Civil War. I was wondering about our guys that sadly lose their lives in a battle today.

Does the left end up declaring them losers?

Yeah, I don't think so either but still. The end is where?

End goal is the arbitrary, ever-shifting line of political correctness, as defined by the left.

Lovely.
