I caught part 2 and 3 of this show a few nights ago and learned some things I didn’t know.
Though I was politically active at the time of the Lewinsky affair, I didn’t know all the behind the scene dealings.
I found some deep irony after watching the program. Mostly, I felt there was some parallels between what the Republicans were trying to do with Clinton then as compared to how the Dems are now going after Trump.
Both presidents presided over good economies, both had a reputation as playboys, both were involved in impeachment proceedings to some extent. And just like in Trump’s case, the Republicans were trying to look into dirt on Clinton over things that he did in his private life before being president (Whitewater)
Now I know there are many differences, like no one spied on Clinton, and Clinton had the press behind him, but some of the parallels are still uncanny.
Part 4 of 6 airs in early December.

Also, Clinton actually committed a verifiable crime. There wasn’t even a question.

Trump has committed no crime that anyone at all can identify.

I’m sure Vice wanted it this way.

People think Clinton was impeached over a BJ. This is not the case.

He was impeached for perjury and witness tampering.

This is true. But it’s also true that the lies were about the affair.

As someone else who lived during that time you have to remember we as a nation were morphing from a more Godly nation to a less Godly nation, a more or less giving up some of our scruples interim, so to say. i.e., our culture was going through a transformation. Extramarital sex back then was more taboo than it is nowadays. It was still frowned upon more than it wasn't. In the meanwhile the lack of trust within the government by the people was growing. LBJ and his Nam screw ups and Nixon with his Watergate are two good examples of why government was becoming less trusted.

Today, we all see, no matter what side of the aisle you're on, just how much the lack of trust in government and politicians has exacerbated thus bringing us to the point we are.

Funny you started this thread. I, like you, was fairly young during the whole Clinton impeachment and don’t really know the details of everything that what down. I ran across his second 4 hour deposition yesterday and I am truly amazed of how good Clinton is at “talking away” lies from his first deposition. Very deserving of the nickname Slick Willy.

The impeachment was the first domino to the current polarization that we see now. On the heels of that, you have the 2000 Election and then so on.

No.
He committed perjury and suborned perjury in a sexual harassment case not a consensual affair.

He was found guilty of this in a court of law, lost his law license, and was barred from ever appearing in the Supreme Court as an attorney.

Bill #metoo Clinton settled Jones’ sexual harassment lawsuit for most of a million 1990s dollars!

Are you saying it’s ok to commit perjury under oath in a legal proceeding as long as it’s certain topics?

Nope. I’m saying the our side hated Clinton in the same way many liberals now hate Trump. And many on our side at that time would have used any means possible to take him down.
Let’s reverse the roles now.
Would you as a conservative want Trump investigated because of an affair?

He wasn’t investigated for an affair.

He had been sued in a court of law for sexual harassment. He lied under oath in the legal proceeding while he was President.

.....and the decline has quickened. I can pinpoint the exact day the "morphing" began.........January 22, 1973.

If it hadn't been for the Clinton episode, I'd say yes. However, since we let his adulterous affairs, and people did know about those previous to him being elected president, slide without consequences I don't have any remorse about letting Trump's alleged affairs slide either.

But the Paula Jones case was all but forgotten and never would have been reexamined unless it was for the Lewinsky affair and the subsequent Linda Tripp conversation tapings.
