quote:To clarify, in case I'm misunderstanding, are you saying that children born to US citizens serving military tours shouldn't be eligible to run for potus?
But if born overseas, you shouldn’t be considered “natural born” for purposes of running for POTUS, VP, etc.Only people born on US soil should get that.

Exactly. Thanks for agreeing .

quote:This policy applies only to the 5000 non-citizens who join the US military each year. How many of those 5000 have children (1) with a non-citizen and (2) while stationed overseas? A hundred? Fewer?
These are Americans deployed overseas in the service of America. Their children should not be at risk of not being Americans.
Remember that the Constitution sets the MINIMUM standard for GUARANTEED citizenship, and these soldiers, sailors and marines simply do not meet that standard. Simultaneously, however, the federal government CAN grant citizenship to people who are not GUARANTEED citizenship by the Constitution.
Given the service being provided by these young people, we SHOULD choose to extend citizenship to their children. Choosing to do otherwise is poor policy, implemented for purely political reasons.

McCain's parents were American Citizens. Therefore he was a Citizen, no matter the location of his birth. The OP is referencing children of Non-Citizens whose parents work for the FedGov/DoD overseas.

No sense in arguing with someone who has never been through the process

Maybe a "Russian oligarch" wrote the rule.

Basic rule of thumb. If the info you just got seems completely at odds with what you think makes sense, you should at least make an attempt include that middle step first.

I read an entire article on this and your title is out of context. My child was born Military overseas. Of the very place he was born he was not an American 'technically' he was a military brat born on a base overseas. Military and contractors will have do additional State Dept. paperwork is all. They will be Americans after more supporting paper work is all.
