I think most of the Southerners who supported secession thought they were continuing the legacy of the Founding Fathers. The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, authored by Jefferson and Madison, conceived of a compact theory among the states. Since states were the one's who ratified the Constitution and the sole reason for its implementation, the states could deem an act unconstitutional if the Federal government exceeded its expressly delegated powers.
and that's all fine and dandy, for them, back then.... but in 2017, we know the history... we know the motivations... we know the outcome... and yet some still honor it.... why? are there not other ways to celebrate "southern pride" that don't include symbolism to a fallen rebel nation?
as a lifelong resident of Louisiana, i'm a damn proud Cajun... our greatest resource is not our oil, or seafood, or anything else in that vein... it's our people... we are resilient, diligent, and loyal... though MY state is not where i'd like it to be in many areas, i am damn proud of how we always seem to bounce back and help each other recover when things go bad... i'm proud of our heritage, and even though it does include a black eye in respect to slavery, we have a rich and diverse cultural past that is second to none... i don't feel the need to honor ANYONE from the CSA and/or their symbols/flags to display my "southern pride"

No doubt. When will Republicans learn that they won't be liked or treated fairly no matter what they do, so why not please your constituents and frick the other side!

Get over it. The confederate flag is the ultimate participation trophy.

Trump has made you woke. You still get a little scared from time to time but it seems the training wheels have come off for you.

Nikki Haley was an outstanding governor. SC moved in the right direction under her. That flag was like an anchor holding the state back in the eyes of many. It wasn't worth the grief and aggravation...and NCAA boycott.
That flag went up on the state house in the 1960s...come on, y'all.

Idiot Republicans think they can play the media's game and win.
They don't understand that no matter what they say and do, they'll always be presented as monsters.
The song and dance the media makes them do under the barrel of a gun is political theater.

I've continually said as such.

Oh it just solved one problem and created another.
It appeased the militant left and SJWs and it didn't end there as it opened up an entirely new theater in the culture wars and race baiting and demagoging politicians have taken advantage of it to cover their arse and/or profit from it and it started a creepy taliban style white washing of American history.
Nikki Haley fricked up royally here.

Removing it was the right thing to do for SC. I mean, maybe as a minority, it bothered her to see the flag every day.
The heavily conservative legislature voted for the removal as well. It was a drag on the state. It went beyond the Dylan Roof thing.
Putting all of today's troubles on Haley is just lazy.

100% truth.
Stay the course, Sentrius.

Too bad it had national reverberations that are still being felt to this day.
That's precisely my point.

Didn't she reject calls to take it down as a legislator?

She practically went scorched earth to get it removed and pulled every trick she had when the legislature. There was no way she was going to fail on this.

The leftist history removal and sanitizing craze all started with her. Of fricking course I am putting it all on her.
And I think she would agree with me considering where it led to today's times.

sanitizing history Taliban style
This is the most underrated statement that people don't look at or realize.
History is history. Everyone was so appalled at how isis groups were destroying art, museums, and historical sites of their homeland trying to erase history. How do they not see this is the precursor to that? Admittedly I believe the battle flag of northern Virginia belongs in a museum as it has no place on a statehouse, but I don't believe in wiping it from the annals of history.
Now the question becomes where does the line get drawn?
Do we let Asian Americans tear down FDR statues because he placed citizens in internment camps?
Do we stand by and let Israel blow up the pyramids of Gaza?
Do we weaponize Poland to strike back at Germany or Russia?
Where does it stop? A whole can of worms have been opened and a hard line needs to be drawn in the sand and stuck by it.

Nikki Haley didn't give birth to Black Lives Matter, a pivotal piece in all of this. Plus, the election of trump has to be accepted as a critical factor in all the hoopla today. Hell, even the rise in social media has given all of this a voice where before it may have been on page 6 of the Wednesday newspaper.
Haley may have been a contributing factor, a spark, to the other removals. But you can't put it all on her. It has been a perfect storm of things.

The flag in sc was taken down and taken to the confederate history museum. It had an honor guard as it was taken away. They didn't burn it or piss on it or use it to wipe their arse.

She was a damn strong conservative governor that made South Carolina into one of the most productive states in the country and brought in good gets like BMW, Boeing and whatnot. It has one of the best business climates in the country.
WTF are you talking about. She did not bring BMW or Boeing to South Carolina.

I know this. I wasn't implying that they did.
