I just sold a 2015 F 350 with 23000 miles on it for $4500 more than the sticker price was on it when I bought it in 2014......I know I've never "made" money on a vehicle before...but this truck sold, used, for nearly $10000 more than I bought it for NEW......the full sized truck market is BLISTERING hot....has been in New Mexico and West Texas for at least 3 years....even when the oil field shut down. Seriously.....if you've got a late model low mileage 3/4-1 ton diesel 4wd that you want to sale go to the Permian basin.....someone will sling a wad of cash your way.......but don't buy a new one......people are bidding certain models up! It's the damnedest thing I've ever seen....
I'm out of the new truck business......I've owned a new one every 3 years for the last 30 years.....but I am not paying $50k for a pick up truck, period. Never again. I'm not paying $30 k for one. I am out. I've got a 1972 long bed 3/4 ton C 10 that I've owned for years. I'm in the process of putting a modern EFI small block in that bastard and front nad rear discs and rebuilding the front end and I will drive that batsratd til I reach room temperature. When I'm done I'll have about $8 K in it.....and I enjoy fricking with it so its all good....and then I got a 98 Tahoe my wife bought new I'm going to restore for around $6k and I'm good! No $100k truck for this ole boy...I'm done with that madness....

As long as people keep paying it they'll continue to raise the prices.
Like the folks that pay 5 or 6 bucks for a half bag of chips, or 9 bucks for a burger combo.

Yeah people make fun of guys for driving a "flashy" Mercedes priced at like $40k-$45k and then roll up in a $70k-$80k truck and no one says a word. Doesn't make any sense.
I wish truck companies would improve their quality to justify the price tag.

This feels like the housing market in 2007

It's because a truck can make you some money, and has uses beyond just getting from point a to b

I never thought I'd see a mid level 4x2 sell for almost $50k

No. GM and Dodge should have gone under and Obama backed them out and they only lost Pontiac and Saturn out of it. Ford didn't take the bailout, but they weren't as bad off as GM/Dodge.
Once "To big to fail" started entering the lexicon, the manufacturers had free reign because the rules of the market did not apply to them. Then the dick swinging contest of full size trucks added to the party.

Paint prices due to EPA regulations be driving up the price. Thank a Libby.
He'll reduce regs and hopefully the prices will come down.a bit.
Tacoma's and Tundra's have the best re sale value because they will run past 100K miles like a clock.

Jokes aside, truck prices are pretty incredible.
It’s like they are made of 14k gold.
It’s weird.

I talked to a guy that is a mechanic at a dealership and he says the Toyota trucks will run like a clock to 200K miles. But it still does not justify the ridiculous prices.

When the emission regulations came up it gave the truck manufacturers a way to justify a cheaply made vehicle. The first step was using cheaper metal to get the weight down. After people didn't complain they went from cast iron blocks to aluminum blocks. Once again to reduce weight. Next was lighter cheaper plastic interiors. Next was active fuel management. I actually bet that the cost of producing a truck now is probably no more than 5% more expensive than it was in 2001 simply because of the use of cheaper materials

Same here. Wife wants a Tahoe with a few options. Just can't justify spending that amount of coin while the smaller SUV she has now still runs ok.

Gas prices down. Demand up.
I refuse to spend more than $35,000 on a 4x4 vehicle or $30,000 on a 4x2 vehicle, but the used market is making that increasingly difficult.
Wait until the next recession and/or a long term rise in gas prices, and all of these folks who don't need 4x4 pickups and SUV's will be dumping them like hot potatoes, and factory prices will come down, too.

Funny thing, in the last ten years or so, I bought at least 5 vehicles. When I buy I set parameters on price, type, options etc. I then narrow it down to 3 or 4 different cars/trucks and go on test drives.
I have been to many different dealerships over that period to test drive, given my info to the salesman and only once have I been called back or bird dogged by a salesman. That dude was an Asian, which agrees with my opinion of their work ethic.
With prices as high as they are, you would think that they would have to work harder to make a sale. I doesn’t make sense to me.

There's no way that truck should cost that much.

I buy used with cash. I hate notes. Been looking at older Chevy 2500s to pull a camper.
They have increased in price 5-8k since April.
No shite. I track them on a spreadsheet to keep an average for me. Its unreal

Ok then, we have established that the prices of used are going way up.
1 Really, what it the underlying cause?
2 How to tell when the bubble will burst?
