About 1/4 of all ABC stations didn’t air the first episode of NYPD Blue in the early 90s.
It failed long term because the show got excellent ratings and reviews in spite of that.
This is a little different because Kimmel’s ratings were in the shitter before preemption.

Can Sinclair just put his show on at 3 AM and meet contract obligations?

Disney brought Kimmel back to stop the bleeding of Disney+ cancelations to protest suspending Kimmel. They're apparently expecting to raise the price of Disney+ and that was meant to have a baked in capture of existing subscribers to help them hit whatever revenue projections they need.
What's going to happen is Kimmel will be on air with even worse ratings than before because no one was watching him prior to not being carried on Sinclair. Sure, I suspect he may have a 1 or 2 week viewership spike due to him becoming a part of the culture war. However, it will taper off quickly and the loss of a third or more of ABC affiliates will push his ratings into the zone where they just can him due to performance.

It will be interesting to see what Nexstar decides to do.

But ABC has SEC football now, you know,.............the semi-pro league.

quote:I am pretty sure there were a lot of lesbian related episodes that they would not show. Roseanne, Ellen and Friends all had lesbian related episodes that some affiliate would not air. They were all relatively popular shows though. Even Ellen pulled in about 10 times Kimmel's viewers the season she got cancelled.
Has anything like this happened before?

39% of the population is going to be blacked out by Sinclair.
Yep...and don't forget to add in Nexstar affiliates.

Jimmy Kimmel's ratings were in the gutter BEFORE he stepped in that steaming pile of dogshit. Now 60+ cities won't air his show. ABC may end up being the biggest loser in this. A whole lot of people side with common decency and are outraged by the Charlie Kirk assassination. ABC is playing with fire with their advertisers. Nobody wants to be the next Bud Light. Not really sure what their decision makers are thinking with this. Pissing off the leftists is far better than pissing off the majority.

quote:Back when I used to buy advertising, I was surprised by how much it cost to run an ad during reruns of "The Andy Griffith Show". This was just 10 tens ago. It was one of the highest rated shows during it's evening slot. Reruns of a sitcom that aired in the 1960's. I imagine Sinclair would get higher ratings if they run that instead of Kimmel's show.
For quite a number of years, channel-3 (ABC) in Shreveport would air a big feature-film (from a syndicated package) on Monday evenings, from 6:00-8:00pm, and thus not air the ABC programming from 6:30-8:00. Hence, series like "The Young Lawyers" or "The New People" wouldn't be seen in the market. To no one's sorrow.

It has been posted on this board that the Family Feud reruns doubled Kimmel's ratings. Someone should post the ratings for the time slot between the stations that air Kimmel and the ones that don't.
I bet it is never dull being employed in television.
