Let's assume this is true. Comey also got what he wanted - a independent prosecutor that will keep the "cloud" over the Trump admin. Plus, Trump will also be nagged about the tapes and testifying under oath to refute Comey's record of the conversations.
I don't see how Trump is in a better position now. The only way he wins in all of this is if Comey is actually lying. However, Comey has no motivation to lie through his teeth about a taped conversation at this point. It would be the stupidest bluff in history.

If he Is 2 steps ahead the Russia investigation would be over, Tax reform passed, Obamacare repealed, and a infrastructure bill passed.
Now that Comey has released/leaked info it will not be long before more IC info is leaked to hurt Trump. You don't mess with the FBI (IC) or they will try hard to find something.
There is probably not tapes and even if there is it could only hurt him politically, because these tapes will not be just the Comey conversations.

He'll regret it when it makes the obstruction of justice case even stronger. Threatening tapes when you have none is the desperate ploy of a guilty man. Having tapes and destroying or at least never producing them is even worse. There's no scenario in which this ridiculous stunt helps Trump other than the tapes actually existing and proving Comey a liar (and we all know that isn't happening).

If they do exist, they are released, and they show Trump making statements he has publicly denied making, then they prove Comey correct and Trump's lies will further demonstrate his corrupt intent.
And now that congress is requesting the tapes and Mueller will certainly subpoena them eventually, if Trump doesn't admit they don't exist but fails to produce them, then he'll just be impeached for that and that aline even if there were nothing else on him.

It makes him look worse and gives Comey more credibility that Trump would not release the tapes or that tapes don't exist. That Trump postured that he could use tapes to prove the content of the the meetings with Comey to support his side of things and then refuses to step up when Comey puts his own story forward makes it look like Trump is either simply a liar or has something to hide. It makes no sense that you are trying to spin this as anything other than shady or incompetent for Trump. The only way Trump should come out looking "good" from this is if he releases the tapes, and they prove that Comey was lying.

He didn't gloss over it. He immediately addressed it by saying that is the only way that Trump looks good. This being able to hold a conversation thing is hard for you isn't it?
