This is valuable land. They will rebuild. Weather along the Los Angeles coastline isn’t something you find in many other places.
Santa Monica and Malibu home prices may go even higher because this.

And what can they do if you just tell them to get bent after you change your DL??
Simple answer, you probably will get your assets seized down the line. Your credit probably gets wrecked.
You need to prove your don't owe the taxes. It really isn't an innocent until proven guilty world when it comes to tax assessments.

So if you change your DL in DEC. Pay the taxes for that prior year, they are still able to go after you for following years?? How a state allows another state to do that to their citizens, even a new one, is crazy.
No way this hasn't been taking to scouts and won. What other states have this kind of power?

And think of how many people they pay to sort through that.
It usually isn't going to be looked at by more than a few people in the case of a individual tax assessment. And when everything was boiled down, it was whether a business was sold before or after the date she moved out of the state.
I was able to put 90% of the packet together myself and I am pretty sure it was only the guy who was originally assigned the case who looked at my response.
Based on the date we mailed it and when I got his response, I think he read it as soon as it hit his desk, got about halfway through it and threw up his hands.

Changing your DL doesn't mean much when it comes to where your income is sourced. That's for any state. It might help your case but it is pretty low on their list of things they care about. You can easily get or keep a DL in a state you are rarely physically present in.

The fair program that many bought into for fire insurance has a massive shortfall. $6B in exposure & only $700m cash on hand
This sounds concerning. But what actually happens is that FAIR is the states insurer of last resort. That means that it cannot go insolvent (and as such aren’t a part CIGA). The state will then put an assessment on every homeowners policy from every carrier in the state to cover the loss.
Basically all homeowners policies already have an assessment listed as a line item. It will just now be significantly more.

I expect federal aid for this will be gargantuan.
Needs to be tied to deporting illegals and fixing their elections.

Got it. Took me a bit but it's in where you make your money. Makes sense. Still a lot of ifs in this situation but got it. Thx.

In texas you pay property taxes in January for the benefit of owning your house the previous year. If California operates in similar fashion, Property owners will have empty lots that they have to pay the full house burden right now. Been there done that and its not nice
I'd tell them, you can have it. The bank too.

As someone who has tax clients who have moved out of California, they are like the fricking terminator tracking you across the world trying to claw back that tax revenue. I had to send in a 100 page dossier with everything from their outlook calendar, Delta flight records over 5 years, moving yard sale advertisement from crags list, emails back and forth requesting a transfer, and what I believe won the day for me, their dog's vet history showing the canine xanax they needed to transport the dog by plane to the east coast.
They will make your life miserable making sure you keep paying taxes there even if you live across the country. If they can draw any connection between your income and the state, they will say that is enough to claim 100% of it.
There is a zero percent chance I would've done all that. I move, frick you. A state you no longer live in has no power or authority over you.
Anything beyond "Here is my new address" is effort they don't deserve and are not owed.

OK. If you say so. What do I know after about 20 years doing this. You are quite free to try the "screw you, you have no authority here" method if you want. You should make sure to keep a bit of cash on hand when that state puts a lien on your property and your your bank accounts get frozen.
But if you want to have a bank account in this country (along with a lot of other things), you kind of need to give them your social security number and the you will tell the states exactly where you are for them to come get their money.

I’m assuming you are referring to situations where people have changed their residency, but may or may not have actually moved, kept a house or two, possibly a business, etc. Possibly for tax avoidance reasons. Walking the line on the max/min days lives in each state, etc.
Different situation than a bona fide move, as I referred to.

The land has value and will be taxed at lot value, which will still be high.
Would be fair to give them a reprieve. Not of the total, but say 25-30% off for a year or two. Something like that.
They’ll be paying tax on a lot that is unlivable through no fault of their own.

canal lot at 150 m bucks against a 4m tax is not a good walk away

Take Palisades for example...all those homes unlivable. So for years, those people are gone and live elsewhere. Businesses are gone. Millionaires are forced out and their tax revenue will be gone
This isn't for a month, like a hurricane, this will be several years.
There will be a lot of revenue from the rebuilding. LA is going to have to streamline their building permits as they are historically terrible to work with
