"This bill will keep military body armor out of the wrong hands," Honda said. "It would ensure that only law enforcement, firefighters and other first responders would be able to access enhanced body armor."

quote:

"We're not talking about just a standard bullet-proof vest," he said. "We're talking about body armor that is designed for warfare, designed to protect against law enforcement ammunitions." …

quote:

"There's nothing more dangerous than an unstoppable, well-armored shooter," he said.

I disagree Mr Honda, there is nothing more dangerous than an unstoppable well-armored government.

I'd like to see the stats on how many "Well Armored Shooters" there have been in the last 10yrs as opposed to unarmed killings by police officers. I'd bet the latter is a much higher number.

Honda announced the legislation last week at a press conference with various law enforcement officials in his district who have endorsed the propsal.

Of course, Honda is overlooking a lot of other scenarios, and outright ignoring the possibility that law-abiding citizens would have any reason to wear protective garments, whether they're in danger from armed criminals or a no-knock police raid gone awry. The San Jose Police Department's ethics are questionable already: One of its former chiefs has been sounding the alarm for years about the dangers of police militarization, meawhile the department has been pushing for greater surveillance capabilities and was just caught lying about owning a camera-equipped drone.

It's old guys like Honda that's all about protecting the police state. Bow to the police state.

The only one I can remember is the Aurora theater shooter. There was an LA bank robbery about 20 years ago where the perps were wearing body armor.

The number of unarmed civilians killed by po-po is unquestionably higher in spite of the fact that there are a lot more civilians than LEOs.

I think his was just a ballistic vest which guards against shrapnel and small 9mm.

I have friends that are police. I don't hate them, I just think they should be held to a higher standard than regular citizens. They protect their own, and have an "us vs. public" mindset that isn't conducive to doing what's right, it's get the job done and cover up anything that goes awry.

Wanting to be able to wear body armor is "hating the police?"

How in your mind does thinking legislation banning civilians from buying a product equate to hate for the police

On a side not, yes, I think 90% of cops are dipshits but that has NOTHING to do with disagreeing with this legislation.

People are tired of watching un educated pigs shooting their dogs & kids.
Respect is not afforded someone only because they have a gun & badge until the law enforcement community understands how respect is earned the feeling is never going to change.

From the online purchase order attributed to him, it was just a simple "tactical" vest that did nothing more than hold pouches for his magazines.

I can imagine that he definition of first responders will be expanded to cover all sorts of government employees. How long before teachers are declared first responders in the case of violence on campus?

Doesn't the right to bear arms imply a right to do what is necessary to defeat armor? This is an attempt to circumvent the 2nd Amendment.
