I, nor did anyone else (at least in this thread), say that tariffs make an economy.

Our national debt proves that false, as does over a decade of our debt to GDP ratio.
Our national debt was caused by massive spending. Not because of trade.

Of course they work, in that they have an impact. I don't think the concept of increased taxes modifying behavior is very controversial. The potential problem with them is that they don't work the way many of you seem to think they work. They're not a free lunch.

If you don’t understand that we need to decrease our deficits, produce more at home & get a hold of our debt - we can’t help you

Trade deficit and federal debt (spending more than you bring in) are a combination to create the total.
What's the interest rate on the trade deficit?

As I said last night, this means nothing. Talking points for simpletons. A trade deficit means you're rich.

Debt to GDP?

If we were making up the difference in the trade deficit with debt held by foreign countries, and /or if we didn't have the world's reserve currency/petro dollar, then there would be more potential for direct relationships.

Our federal debt is caused by borrowing/spending too much fedbucks. That has a direct relationship with GDP. If we cut spending and face the negative economic/GDP impacts from that, I don't see us becoming less reliant on cheap goods from abroad, and our non-governmental exports will still exist at the same scale.

Nothing reduces the trade deficit faster than a good ol' fashioned recession. Which I fully expect some to argue would be a good thing. They're only one step away.
