What the frick is the point of redaction in an affidavit, beyond maybe "trauma" of victims families reading what happened to their loved ones?

The motive is important. The more details the better.
MAYBE, as a compromise, they can tell us how many gunshot wounds each victim sustained and if any of those wounds were point-blank. That doesn't establish motive by itself, but I think the public has the right to know whether the "10 gsw to the head" rumor is true for Ella Cook (RIP).
Also, maybe some of the students acted heroically. For instance, maybe the Muslim student who was killed was trying to stop the shooter.
