She was arrested before the war. But the amount she had on her was under the allowed amount under Russian decriminalization, which supposedly allows under 6 grams for personal use. The smuggling charge specifically is bullshite, as she had 0.7 grams of oil, while Russian law itself specifies that large-scale smuggling is defined as amounts greater than 10 times a single dose, with extremely large-scale cases having 50 times a single dose of whatever substance. It was clearly prosecuted along political lines, as I'm pretty sure the Russians use this specific charge to try to detain Russian journalists who might report on something that the regime doesn't like.

The irony is that if this hadn’t become a worldwide story, the sentence would have likely been much more lenient.
