Obstruction of Justice by Obama
quote:
For Adm Lorge, the pressure came from President Barack Obama’s White House and also the Senate.
“At the time, the political climate regarding sexual assault in the military was such that a decision to disapprove the findings, regardless of merit, would bring hate and discontent on the Navy from the President, as well as senators including Senator Kirstin Gillibrand,”
Lorge wrote in his affidavit. Lorge believes that based on his conversations with senior officials in the Navy, he was essentially told that “if you disapprove the findings, it will ruin your career.”

You should edit the OP link to the Navy Times link -or- let it be duly noted; The original article is NavyTimes: before the usuals arrive and poke fun of the daily caller...

I can think of at least 4 times in my career where I felt pressured by higher ups to come to a certain conclusion during an investigation.
3 of those times were of "we sure would like to see this outcome" variety (not " I hope this is the outcome") where it was pretty clearly implied that my career would be advanced if I helped them, but I didn't feel like there was a corresponding threat if I didn't , so I wrote that off as BS.
One time though, I was pretty explicitly told by a US Senator that if I didn't back off, my career would be as good as over. I won't reveal the Senator's name, nor give any details of the case, but it was fairly high profile and pretty obvious that this Senator was hoping to avoid embarrassing certain people within the military. I reported said Senator , and ran my investigation as I saw fit.

An Admiral usually obeys POTUS' every order unless unlawful; and maybe felt too much career related pressure at the time (we all have to eat and preserve our reputations)
He is speaking out now, that's all that matters.

The SAPR climate in the military is intense, and for good reason. We have a serious problem with sexual assault. But investigators, prosecutors, and commands have had the screws put to them by the WH, Congress, and the Pentagon in ways that have almost certainly led to some railroadings to paint the picture that they were doing what needed to be done.
That said, for this jackass, as convening authority, to approve a conviction he thought unjust to save his own career at the expense of a sailor's life is beyond reprehensible. Why didn't he do his damned job, take the hit, and then take the fight and the facts to the public and the appropriate authorities.
I hope his efforts help this senior chief get a new and fairer trial, but Lorge should not parading himself out there as a hero now that he's taking a stand when it can no longer negatively impact him (in retirement).

Wow fake news much?
The pressure to approve the verdict came from within the navy and it was his perception that there was pressure from the White House and senate because of the general political climate (with no indication that he was directly pressured by either).
So you took this and spun a web of lies and misrepresentations. You sir are the very definition of fake news

wrong
if he felt the President, or anyone else in his chain of command was doing something illegal, he was obligated to report that .

Bullshite... This is the equivalent of a judge deciding the merits of a case based on his/her career future... This admiral is an absolute coward and a disgrace to the uniform...

As you well know, JAG can drag his arse back into service and charge him with a crime here (depending on the statue of limitations and such)

I disagree, POTUS Obama's intention was politically charged in this narrative, which at the time was earth shattering news.
quote:
Lorge believes that disapproving of the verdict against Barry would have created “the perception that military leaders were sweeping sexual assaults under the rug.” He also claimed that the political pressures came from as high up as the White House and the U.S. Senate.
“At the time, the political climate regarding sexual assault in the military was such that a decision to disapprove the findings, regardless of merit, would bring hate and discontent on the Navy from the President, as well as senators including Senator Kirstin Gillibrand,” Lorge wrote in his affidavit.
“I was also aware of cases from other services that became high profile and received extreme negative attention because the convening authorities upset guilty findings in sexual assault cases,” he added.

Pressure from government and the media leads to a feeding frenzy like environment of near hysteria the result of which can be miscarriages of justice.
I've seen it happen.
