The more radical the group, the more this stance is true. Part of the Left's philosophy is that radicals like these are just misunderstood because of racism, religious intolerance, etc. In other words, they are "victims". Like every other group they place people into, they are not just victims but nobility because of their victimhood. This is why you'll see people among the ranks of the Left preaching nonsensical things like "Gays For Palestine". They really think if they just say something like "we respect and understand you" that the group will simply stop being violent.
It's a complete inability to understand motivations and behaviors outside their own, so they push their motivations onto them then treat with them that way. And then they wonder why their negotiations fail to produce positive results (even though they'll try to portray it as working).
