Big XII threatened by TX AG Paxton’s office if league sanctions TX Tech amid Sorsby saga

Texas Tech‘s pending battle with its own conference peers took an interesting turn Thursday when the office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a formal letter to Big 12 officials threatening legal action if it sanctions the Red Raiders for their support of quarterback Brendan Sorsby, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Paxton’s letter even suggested the state would seek “substantially more than $200 million” from both the Big 12 and its other members for any lawsuit that results from their potential actions.
The letter emerges on the same day the Big 12 executive committee — made up of Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark, the chair of its board of directors, Kansas president Doug Girod, and the presidents from Kansas State and BYU — is set to meet to discuss potential options following Monday’s injunction ruling in Lubbock reversing the NCAA’s permanent ban against Sorsby. The full Big 12 Board of Directors is currently scheduled to meet next week to potentially vote on any potential sanctions
quote:
“We are aware that the Big 12 is considering invoking Bylaw 3.6 of the Big 12’s Bylaws to sanction Texas Tech for respecting the Order and continuing its support of Mr. Sorsby as a student-athlete,” Paxton’s letter reads. “This letter serves to notify the Big 12 that any such action would be unlawful and would expose the Conference to substantial liability.
“Any sanction against Texas Tech for acting consistent with the Order would be a per se violation of federal and state antitrust laws — a naked horizontal agreement among competitors to disadvantage Texas Tech by cutting off access to the resources it needs to compete,” the letter continues. “… The Conference would face exposure to treble damages, including for Texas Tech’s lost football revenues, damages to its alumni contributions and damages to its recruitment, plus attorneys’ fees. The total exposure — for both the Big 12 and its members, joint and severally — will be substantially more than $200 million.

I supported Paxton in his primary and still do but this is dumb. The kid needs to be charged for his crimes. The NCAA also need to grow a pair if they want to remain the governing body of college sports.

frick TT and any person or entity that defends them on this.

There is nothing they can do at this point. They have been utterly neutered by the courts.
If the NCAA can't enforce perhaps the oldest and most black-and-white eligibility rules in all of sports....what else are you wanting them to do?

What’s to stop these teams from not playing them?

I’m still wondering how Texas Tech can justify, despite his talent level, putting Sorsby on the field when they know he’s untrustworthy.
A QB affects the outcome of a game pretty much more than anyone else on the field. He could be the second coming of Tom Brady, but if he’s betting on his own games/performance, there’s always a solid chance he’s gonna throw a game.

I don’t disagree. I also don’t understand how a private governing body can be over ruled by courts and lawyers.

Essentially nothing besides buyouts. A lot of teams are already doing so or looking into it.

Their own cowardice, mainly.

They gave him his own TT jersey

I think it makes more sense than the sanctions. Sends a clear message as well.

Depending on who does it. Ole Miss started this shite with a state court granting chambliss eligibility. I could see the NCAA making a move after week one for some of these programs.

Cody gave him a call it seems

Hopefully this helps solidify RJ Luis Jr. to LSU. Yeah I know it’s apples and oranges

While I do think the seat is safely red, Paxton needs to be focused on making sure the final result in November is just that, rather than fricking around with shite like this.
I’m sure one or both of the Double Eagle guys is a significant donor to his campaign, but it ain’t like they’re going to start backing that limp wristed leftist instead if Paxton just sat this out.

So Paxton is ok with what sorsby did, and him not having any accountability for it. Seems like we are due for another rino that will compromise when necessary in the senate.

This is irrelevant as the alternative was cornyn and or now a fig dem.

So if we get another rino that compromises on the values he ran on once he gets into office, that will be ok?

TX Republican voters had the chance to put Wesley Hunt up as their choice. They opted otherwise.

Campbell is Abbott’s golden boy and he knows it. Gambling is practically here yet he’s fighting tooth and nail to allow it for a mediocre QB.
The big donors for Tech, TU, and A&M are like the Arab monarchs of the GCC countries: corrupt as hell, possess more oil money than common sense, and think that the rules don’t apply to them because their wealthy.
