Unfettered freedom from govt existed in the U.S. and it went very well. They were called pioneers or settlers moving west into land with no law, no sheriff, no jails, etc.
The freedom was only restricted by the people they came into contact with. If you thought stealing a horse was OK your neighbors took care of your problem with a noose.

I remember a man who was all gung ho and mocking liberals in the lead up to war in 2002. Then his son was sent to Iraq. That shut him up.
