Yeah...apparently he didn't build the house with the $2.2 million. The house was given to him. Still...he shouldn't have moved into it and kudos for him for realizing his mistake.
According to the AJC:
Mitchell, nephew of “Gone With the Wind” author and a parishioner at the Cathedral of Christ the King, died in 2011. He left $15 million, plus his house on Habersham Road, to his parish and the archdiocese. His will stressed the money was to be used for his parish and for charitable causes.
The archdiocese then demolished Mitchell’s house and built a 6,195-square-foot structure. Monsignor Rector Frank McNamee, pastor at Christ the King, plans to move himself and six priests to Gregory’s old house. Christ the King plans to spend $1.9 million — money from Mitchell’s will — as well as spend nearly $300,000 more in renovations.

I say it doesn't matter how he got it, the good thing is he moved out and no longer lives there. The Archbishop made a mistake realized it and worked to overcome his mistake by living more simple.

People like Creflo Dollar and few other TV preachers you see. Is ok for them to,live in homes that big or is just Catholics that aren't allowed?
You're acting like no one criticized tv preachers for living an opulent lifestyle, which is absurd. They take plenty of criticism, including on this board.
A few takeaways from this thread:
1) The new Pope seems to understand the message of Jesus better than his predecessors. That is worthy of respect.
2) Some Catholics on this board love their religion more than they love Jesus and will defend anything related to Catholicism with bizarre fervor. The Pope is criticizing this guy and people like TnBhoy rush to his defense.
3) You people will hate on Toddy for anything, but somehow he's the obsessed one.

we believe Jesus founded our Church so we are loving Jesus by following his Church. I love Jesus more than the Church but that is the same thing as saying I love my wife more than my children but I still love my children with everything I have.
I'm not debating this and turning this into a religious debate thread.

nonsense, especially in the case of the poster I mentioned. Your fervor for your church makes you as corruptible as Toddy's single issue voting.

see comment above I will not argue this.

Where?
This only became a scandal after the "conservative Catholic" site CMR threw a fit over the hypocrisy of certain Catholic newspapers who will only complain about supposed "conservative" bishops while giving "liberal" bishops a pass.

There was a homosexual who raped a little kid. Therefore he represents all homosexuals.
Am I doing this right?

Maybe not this guy, but the Pope has certainly spoken out against assholes like him that live opulent lifestyles with money that was intended for the poor.
It's pathetic that you can't criticize him.

As pointed out in this thread, "building" a 2.2 mill home in Atlanta isn't an "opulent lifestyle."

It wasn't intended for the poor. It was intended for parish development.

I don't think that his actions were right (I think that all bishops should be monks), however, I'm not going to sit here and allow him to be slandered by toddy.

Exactly.
People on this board are really good at flipping the frick out over their own cognitive dissonance.

Denial and ad hominem in the same post.

After three pages, I still don't see a reason to care about this.
Toddy, why did you post this?

people get to tied up into $ amounts, I think he was probably living too extravagant but people usually only look at $ amounts instead of looking into the situation behind the story.

no reason to care about it but some people are making it look to big.

Perhaps not completely "opulent", but have you driven through this area before? A 7,000 sq ft house in Buckhead isn't exactly roughing it. Keep telling yourself whatever you need to though...

Much better to willfully give than be forced to pay for shopping trips to Spain with threats of imprisonment.

My father started the building process of his dream house in '66 or a tad earlier and it was a very big(4500 square feet under roof) with six bedrooms but that was because there were seven children plus he and my mom to occupy them. He never lived in it for a day and his life insurance paid it off.
