This is just Democratic leadership using cultural politics to drive votes. I’m not a huge fan of it, but don’t act like this doesn’t happen on both sides. There’s plenty of generationally poor white people that haven’t gotten the promised benefits of trickle-down GOP economics that are still persuaded to vote conservative because of cultural issues (abortion, anti-LGBT, etc.)

Obama is signalling, vote against Trump. That is all it is about. He can talk about local poltiicans, but he knows most people don't see elections past top of ticket presidential nominee. And, some don't even know the names on each ticket, just D or R.
